1942 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-006

Description

1942-D WDDO-006 is a doubled die obverse on the 1942-D Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Extremely close doubling appears on the underside of LIBERTY's L. The obverse is also an RPM, a D/D South that Wexler's RPM files list as 1942-D 1¢ WRPM-011. Stage A has a gouge right of the top of GOD's O; a scratch parallel to the rim between TRUST's S and T; and a SW-to-NE scratch right of the throat. By Stage B the earlier markers have faded a great deal, the doubled die and RPM are barely visible, and a crack crosses the bust's base. Reverse Stage A: a SW-to-NE scratch from the bottom of PLURIBUS' P to the top of its L; a scratch heading WSW from the top of AMERICA's second A; and a gouge well below AMERICA's E. On Stage B these are much weaker, and only the gouge below the E is still clearly visible. James C. Moreland submitted Stages A and B. Wexler lists no cross-references. Wexler's comments explain that Stage B was first recorded as paired with 1942-D 1¢ WDDR-006, but that proved wrong because that die's mint mark position differs from WDDO-006, so the cross-reference was removed.
