Description
DDR-004, which Wexler numbers WDDR-001, is a doubled die reverse on the 1941 Washington quarter, listed by both catalogs as Cherrypickers FS-801; Wexler writes it FS-25-1941-801 (013). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties describes a clockwise spread from a pivot near 12 o'clock on QUARTER DOLLAR and on the lower leaves and branches, and notes that it also shows every doubling feature of WWHR-001. Its obverse markers are a crack along the bottom of the bust that reaches the lower queue, a scratch heading NE from the lower right of the L in LIBERTY to the I, a crack heading east through the upper forehead into the hair, and a crack heading east across the hair over the forehead and at the top of the head. On the reverse a crack descends the eagle's right wing and enters the field over the Q in QUARTER, another heads east from the S in PLURIBUS up to the top of the left wing, a third runs down the left wing, and a fourth heads east off the back of the eagle's head. CONECA lists the die as 4-R-IV+V, and Kevin Flynn submitted it. VarietyVista, crediting Delma K. Romines, describes strong spread to the north on the beak, rotation on QUARTER DOLLAR, and tripling on the right side of the wreath near where the branches cross. Under UVC-0170 and DMR-020, an early stage A is unconfirmed. Stage B has an incuse line above the TE of QUARTER, which VarietyVista attributes to hub damage, in a middle state, with the obverse middle too. In stage C both sides are late.
