Description
DDO-004, which Wexler numbers WDDO-002, is a doubled die obverse on the 1941 Washington quarter, listed by both catalogs as Cherrypickers FS-103 (Wexler: FS-25-1941-103). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties describes a strong spread toward the center on LIBERTY, the date, IN GOD WE TRUST and the queue. On the obverse an east-west crack crosses the bottom of the bust and runs into the field. On the reverse a gouge heads west from the top of the E in UNITED, a light crack passes through the lower UN of UNUM, and a light crack heads WSW from the eagle's beak. CONECA lists the die as 4-O-II, and Jim Lafferty submitted it. VarietyVista, crediting Delma K. Romines, describes medium spread together with extra thickness on LIBERTY and on the date, with rotated doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST. Under UVC-0156 and DMR-006, an early stage A is unconfirmed and stage B has both sides in a middle state. Stage C shows a crack across the bust into the front field (late), a light crack in the upper hair, and a crack down the eagle's right wing (late). In stage D the bust crack reaches the queue and the wing crack extends to the Q of QUARTER, both late. In stage E, very late, the bust crack runs through the queue, a crack runs east from the eagle's head to the wing, and another runs from the S of PLURIBUS to the wing beneath AMER of AMERICA.
