1940 (D) Mercury Dime - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-007

Description

1940-D WDDR-007 is a doubled die reverse on the 1940-D Mercury dime, cataloged by the Wexler team. The doubling, a Class II spread toward the center, is visible on UNITED STATES OF, on the leaves above the mint mark, on the tops of the axe and fasces, and on the leaves under OF. On the obverse, SW/NE die scratches lie left of the nose and chin, while parallel SW-to-NE scratches cross the 19 of the date. The reverse carries the repunched mint mark Wexler lists as 1940-D WRPM-009, a D/D North, and a short scratch heads NNE off the fasces' lower right side. Thomas McGowan submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references.
