1940 (D) Mercury Dime - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005 / DDR-004

Description

1940-D WDDR-005 is a doubled die reverse on the 1940-D Mercury dime, cataloged by the Wexler team and by VarietyVista as DDR-004. Both give the CONECA number 4-R-II, which VarietyVista writes as 4-R-II-C. Wexler describes a Class II spread toward the center on STATES OF AMERICA and on the uppermost leaves. John S. Gillilan submitted the coin. On the obverse a short scratch crosses the top of the R in LIBERTY from west to east. The reverse also has a repunched mint mark that Wexler lists as WRPM-008, a D/D North (a secondary D north of the primary); its other reverse markers are a scratch running SW from the middle of the A in STATES, a crack through the tops of the ME in AMERICA, and scratches forming an X left of the right star. VarietyVista describes a light spread on the ES of STATES, on OF AMERICA, and on the upper axe, the fasces and the leaves. It notes that the reverse is listed as its RPM-007, and tracks the die under its marker codes UVC-258 and DMR-012.
