1940 (D) Mercury Dime - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004

Description

1940-D WDDR-004 is a doubled die reverse on the 1940-D Mercury dime, cataloged by the Wexler team. The doubling, a Class II spread toward the center, is visible on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, on the leaves above the mint mark, on the tops of the axe and fasces, and on the leaves under OF. On the obverse, a short die gouge juts from the L in LIBERTY at its bottom right. The reverse carries the repunched mint mark Wexler lists as 1940-D WRPM-001, a D/D North, and above the N in ONE is a short vertical gouge. John Bordner submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references.
