1940 (D) Mercury Dime - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001 / DDR-001

Description

1940-D WDDR-001 is a doubled die reverse on the 1940-D Mercury dime, cataloged by the Wexler team and by VarietyVista as DDR-001. Both give the CONECA number 1-R-II, which VarietyVista writes as 1-R-II-C. Wexler sees the doubling on STATES OF, the tops of the axe and fasces, and the upper right leaves, and follows the die through two stages. At Stage A the obverse is Wexler's doubled die WDDO-004, spread toward the center on the date; the reverse also carries a repunched mint mark, WRPM-005, a D/D North (a secondary D north of the primary), and a scratch heading SSE off the right side of the center bands. At Stage B a different obverse, not a doubled die and without significant markers, is paired with this reverse; the band scratch has been abraded off, and light abrasion lines, mostly SSW to NNE, cover the reverse's right side. John A. Wexler submitted the coin. VarietyVista describes a light spread on STATES OF, the band, the upper axe and the leaves. It notes that the reverse is listed as its RPM-005 and the obverse as its DDO-002, and tracks the pair under its marker codes UVC-107 and DMR-003.
