1940-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
Error
Description
Notable for carrying doubled die characteristics on both sides, the 1940-D Mercury Dime WDDR-001 was attributed by the Wexler Team. The obverse was struck from a die cataloged as WDDO-004, which exhibits spreading toward the center on the date. The reverse is the primary focus of this listing, where an RPM documented as WRPM-005 shows a D/D North repunched mintmark. Reverse Stage A preserves a die scratch running south-southeast from the right side of the center bands — a diagnostic that helps identify earlier die state specimens. By Reverse Stage B, this scratch has been abraded away, replaced by light abrasion scratches oriented SSW to NNE throughout the right side of the reverse. The obverse pairing changed during production: Stage B introduced a new obverse die without the doubled die characteristics, meaning only Stage A specimens display doubling on both sides. Mercury Dime varieties from the late 1930s and early 1940s are actively collected, and the convergence of doubled die obverse and repunched mintmark reverse on a single coin makes this a particularly appealing variety for specialists.
