Description

DDR-002, which Wexler numbers WDDR-006, is a doubled die reverse on the 1940-D Mercury dime with a medium spread on UNITED STATES OF, the top of the axe, the band and the leaves. Both catalogs give the CONECA number 2-R-II, which VarietyVista writes as 2-R-II-C. Wexler describes a counterclockwise spread from a pivot near 6:00 on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the upper right branch and its leaves, and the tops of the axe and fasces. On the reverse, two scratches leave the ribbon at the base of the fasces, one running SE and one east, and meet at the upper left of the D in DIME; one gouge juts from the upper left of the F in OF and another from the leaf beneath the top dot. The obverse is also a doubled die, Wexler's WDDO-011, with a very close Class II spread toward the center on the date. Its markers are several SSW/NNE scratches left of and running over the designer's initials, a short SW/NE scratch above the R in TRUST, and an SSW/NNE crack on the lower back of the cheek. Thomas McGowan submitted the coin. Wexler comments that CONECA lists this doubled die reverse and mentions the doubled obverse without listing it. VarietyVista follows the die under its marker codes UVC-109 and DMR-005.
