Description

Listed under the Doubled Monticello parent, this Jefferson Nickel WDDR-018 exhibits Class II distorted hub doubling with a close spread toward the center showing on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, increasing from left to right. The doubling shows best on UNUM and AMERICA, where the progressive intensification is most visible. Type II steps are noted on the reverse. Die markers on the reverse include a strong die gouge through URIB of PLURIBUS, a die gouge at the center bar of the E of EPU, a die scratch to the lower right of the first S of STATES, and a diagonal die scratch above the first S of STATES extending to the E of FIVE. No significant obverse markers have been noted. The left-to-right intensification pattern across the reverse legends provides a characteristic diagnostic of the distorted hub mechanism, while the strong gouge through URIB of PLURIBUS offers the quickest identification point.
