1939 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-011
ErrorDescription
A Class II Distorted Hub Doubling variety on the 1939 Jefferson Nickel, WDDR-011 shows very close doubling on E PLURIBUS UNUM. This variety appears on the Doubled Monticello subtype — a major 1939 variety where the entire Monticello building exhibits hub doubling, and WDDR-011 documents an additional layer of doubling on the lettering above. The doubling is best examined under magnification, where the secondary impression produces slight extra thickness on the letterforms. Die markers support attribution: on the obverse, die scratches appear near the rim above Y of LIBERTY and above 19 of the date; on the reverse, a slanted die scratch sits between N and T of CENTS, with a long die scratch near the rim above UR of PLURIBUS. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse was in only its second year when this doubled hub created its secondary impression, and the 1939 Doubled Monticello is among the most recognized early Jefferson Nickel varieties. Philadelphia Mint, 75% copper and 25% nickel. Die marker scratches provide reliable confirmation independent of the doubling itself.
