Description

Exhibiting Class II distorted hub doubling, WDDR-008 of the 1939 Jefferson Nickel produces very close doubling on E PLURIBUS UNUM, showing best on UNUM where the secondary impression creates a subtle shelf adjacent to each letter. Class II doubling results from hub distortion between impressions during die preparation, generating tight spread requiring careful magnification. This variety appears on the recognized Doubled Monticello parent type, a major hub variety where Monticello's architectural detail received a visible secondary impression. The obverse die is independently listed as 1939 5c WDDO-006, creating a dual-variety die pairing where both sides carry cataloged doubling features. Reverse die markers include die scratches below MON of MONTICELLO and above and below LLO of MONTICELLO, providing confirming diagnostics within the architectural lettering. The 1939 Jefferson Nickel represents the second year of Felix Schlag's design. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel, this early Jefferson Nickel documents Class II reverse doubling concentrated on UNUM, paired with a cataloged doubled die obverse on a recognized Doubled Monticello variety.
