1939 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-007

Description

Honored as one of the "Best Of" Nickel Doubled Die Varieties, the 1939 Jefferson Nickel WDDR-007 is cross-referenced as CONECA 2-R-II+VI and FS-5-1939-022.5, exhibiting a rare combined Class II and Class VI designation encompassing both Distorted Hub Doubling and Distended Hub Doubling simultaneously. The result is an extremely strong extra thickness — effective quadrupling — on E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, MONTICELLO, and FIVE CENTS. Class II separation lines are visible on the apparent fourth hubbing, indicating the die underwent multiple hubbing sessions with incremental misalignment at each pass. No significant die markers are noted on the obverse. On the reverse, a die scratch runs from right of center of the small right window northnortheast to the roof, and the die is identified with Type II steps on Monticello. Felix Schlag designed the Jefferson Nickel in 1938, with Monticello rendered in architectural detail that makes hub doubling on the building particularly dramatic. Doubled die reverse varieties from this early production era are among the most visually impressive in the entire Jefferson Nickel series.
