Bearing VarietyVista designations UVC-1887 and DMR-012, this 1939-D Washington Silver Quarter records the seventh cataloged repunched mintmark for the date-mint combination. The die state documentation follows the standard three-stage tracking: Stage A at early die state is unconfirmed, Stage B confirms both reverse and obverse at mid-die-state, and Stage C at late die state remains unconfirmed. The 1939-D falls in the early years of the Washington Quarter series, which began production in 1932 — only seven years before this coin was struck, making the design still relatively fresh in its production history. During this early period, all mintmarks were applied by hand punch to individual working dies at the Denver Mint, and the relatively small production volumes compared to later decades meant fewer total working dies, making each RPM variety proportionally more significant within the date's die population. The Washington Quarter was designed by John Flanagan based on Jean-Antoine Houdon's famous bust, struck in 90% silver at 6.25 grams with a diameter of 24.3 mm.
