1939 (D) Washington Quarter - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-002

Description

1939-D WRPM-002 is a repunched mint mark on the 1939-D Washington quarter, cataloged by the Wexler team. The mint mark is D/D/D, with both extra D's lying south. Wexler notes no prominent obverse markers. On the reverse, two cracks follow the contour of the right wing below the ITED of UNITED, and a third crack starts at the I in UNITED, curves along that wing and leaves it near the Q in QUARTER. Three short cracks follow the contour of the left wing below the MERI of AMERICA, and inside, under the AM of AMERICA, a crack near that wing's contour passes through the URIBUS of PLURIBUS. Eric Axtell submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as RPM #4. Wexler comments that mechanical doubling accounts for the doubling closest to the mint mark's bottom. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
