Error
Description
A D/D/D North, South triple-punched mintmark, this 1939-D Washington Silver Quarter was documented by VarietyVista and awaits specimen submission for new high-magnification color digital photographs. Die markers UVC-0927 / DMR-010: Stage A with reverse and obverse at EMDS; Stage B at MDS (unconfirmed); Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The triple D/D/D pattern with opposing north and south displacements documents at least three separate punch applications with corrections attempted in both directions. Designed by John Flanagan, struck in 90% silver and 10% copper at 6.25 grams and 24.3 mm at the Denver Mint. The 1939-D had a mintage of approximately 7.1 million pieces, a relatively modest figure that limits the total die population and makes RPM varieties for this early Washington Quarter date inherently scarcer than those from higher-mintage years.
