1939-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-004

Description

Documented by VarietyVista under die tracking codes UVC-0701 and DMR-008, the 1939-D Washington Quarter RPM-004 is a triple repunched mintmark variety — cataloged as D/D/D South, South — making it one of the more emphatic mintmark repunchings known for this 90% silver issue. A repunched mintmark results when the mint employee applied the mintmark punch to the working die, repositioned it, and struck again, leaving secondary and tertiary ghost impressions visible in the hardened die steel. RPM-004 progresses through three die stages. Stage A (EDS) is unconfirmed pending additional specimens. Stage B (MDS) develops a die crack running down the eagle's right wing and a second crack through URIBUS to the wing under AMER of AMERICA; the obverse is EDS at this stage. Stage C (LDS) is unconfirmed. With two southward repunchings stacked on the primary D, this variety offers multiple layers of displaced mintmark impressions that make attribution straightforward under 5x magnification once the collector knows where to look — south of the primary D ball and flag.
