Description
An early Washington Quarter variety from only the eighth year of the series, this 1939-D RPM-002 documented by VarietyVista carries die markers UVC-0107 / DMR-006 tracking three stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B at MDS with a light die crack down the eagle's right wing on the reverse and the obverse also at MDS; Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The die crack descending along the eagle's wing documents structural fatigue in a high-relief area prone to stress concentration. Struck at Denver in 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing 6.25 grams at 24.26 mm diameter, the 1939-D was designed by John Flanagan based on Houdon's celebrated 1785 bust of Washington. Prewar silver quarter RPMs are particularly sought by series specialists.
