1937 Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse DDO-003

Description

Presenting light spread on the LIBERTY inscription, this 1937 Washington Quarter doubled die obverse is cataloged by VarietyVista with UVC-0062 and DMR-005 across three die states. Stage A and Stage C represent early and late die state respectively, both unconfirmed. Stage B reaches mid-die state, characterized by numerous fine die scratches on both the obverse and reverse. These pervasive fine scratches suggest the die underwent some surface abrasion during its service life, potentially from contact with foreign material or intentional die maintenance. While the spread on LIBERTY is described as light, the Washington Quarter's deeply incised lettering can reveal even subtle doubling under proper magnification and lighting. The 1937 date falls within the early years of the Washington Quarter series, which began in 1932, and die varieties from this formative period are actively collected by series specialists. The DDO-003 designation indicates at least two other doubled die obverses precede it in the 1937 catalog, reflecting meaningful variety diversity for this pre-war date.
