1937 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004

Description

Attributed by Joe Feld, the 1937 Washington Quarter WDDO-004 displays a strong spread toward the center on the reverse elements: USA, QUARTER DOLLAR, E PLURIBUS UNUM, the outer wings, and the lower leaves and branch stems. Cross-referenced as CONECA 2-R-II+VI, this variety combines Class II and Class VI doubling characteristics. Die markers on the reverse include a die gouge positioned between the upper second R in QUARTER and the D in DOLLAR, along with a short die scratch running west-southwest from the branch stem above the D in DOLLAR. These reverse markers provide reliable diagnostics for authentication. Despite its WDDO designation in the Wexler files, the primary doubling interest lies in the reverse design elements, where the centripetal spread creates a visually appealing effect across the inscriptions and eagle motifs. The combination of spread on both lettering and design elements makes this a well-rounded variety for Washington Quarter collectors.
