1937 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

Designated Wexler 1937 25c WDDO-002, this Philadelphia Mint Washington Quarter doubled die obverse displays a spread toward the east on IN GOD WE TRUST that increases in intensity moving from left to right across the motto — a progressive widening characteristic of hub displacement where the offset grows proportionally with distance from the pivot point. Die markers on the obverse include a die scratch running northeast from Washington's queue (the tied hair at the back of the head) just above the bow, providing a linear reference point for die identification. On the reverse, die scratches appear above and below the branch north of the D in DOLLAR, adding a second attribution zone on the opposite face. The 1937 Washington Quarter was struck in 90% silver composition during the fifth year of the series that began in 1932 to commemorate the bicentennial of George Washington's birth. John Flanagan's obverse portrait, based on a Jean-Antoine Houdon bust, features the distinctive queue hairstyle that provides the landmark referenced in the die marker description. Hub doubling on the motto creates thickened lettering that becomes most pronounced on the rightmost characters of TRUST.
