1937-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

Cross-referenced as Fivaz-Stanton FS-501, this VarietyVista-documented 1937-D Washington Silver Quarter exhibits a D/D Southeast repunched mintmark with extensive die cracking at Stage B. Die markers UVC-0071 / DMR-005: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with a die crack on wing under UNITED at MDS, a die crack on wing under AME of AMERICA, a light die crack in upper hair at MDS, and a light die crack across bust; Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The four simultaneous die cracks at Stage B — two on the eagle's wings and two on Washington's portrait — document widespread structural stress developing relatively early. Designed by John Flanagan, struck in 90% silver and 10% copper at 6.25 grams and 24.3 mm. The FS-501 Cherrypickers' Guide listing makes this actively sought, and the 1937-D mintage of approximately 7.2 million pieces limits the surviving population.
