1937-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002

Description

Attributed as Wexler Variety ID 1937-D 1c WDDR-002, this Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent exhibits a very close Class II spread toward the center on UNUM and the top of the right wheat ear. Class II doubling results from a rotational hub misalignment, producing a pivot-point spread that intensifies with distance from the axis of rotation. This variety is notably a paired doubled die — the obverse die used in this marriage is listed as WDDO-003, meaning collectors who locate WDDR-002 also possess a doubled die obverse, enhancing the coin's appeal as a dual-variety piece. Several die markers aid attribution. On the obverse, die scratches run to the northwest from TY in LIBERTY and northeast-to-southwest in the field east from the center of E in WE. On the reverse, a die scratch extends northeast from the left upper side of the M in UNUM. These scratches provide reliable secondary diagnostics for confirming the die marriage independent of the doubling itself.
