1936 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-004
Error
Description
Cataloged as UVC-0045, DMR-006, this 1936 Philadelphia Mint Washington Quarter displays a medium spread on LIBERTY and the date. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A is EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B (MDS) shows a die crack on the wing under UNITED on the obverse; Stage C (LDS) develops a die crack across the bust and across the forehead to the hair, while the reverse reaches LDS. The progression from the wing crack in Stage B to the bust and forehead cracks in Stage C traces the structural deterioration of this obverse die across its production run. Struck in 90% silver at the Philadelphia Mint, the 1936 Washington Quarter is a fourth-year issue of John Flanagan's design, which debuted in 1932 to commemorate the bicentennial of George Washington's birth. Doubled die obverse varieties on pre-1965 silver Washington Quarters combine precious metal content with die variety collecting interest, and DDO-004's medium spread on LIBERTY provides an accessible diagnostic for cherrypickers examining circulated silver quarters.
