1936 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-005
Error
Description
Submitted by Joe Feld and cataloged by the Wexler Team, WDDO-005 of the 1936 Washington quarter displays close tripling spread toward the center on the date and the bottom of the ribbon, with close doubling spread toward the center on LIBERTY. Cross-referenced as CONECA 3-O-II, this variety combines two distinct doubling classes on a single die. Obverse die markers include a short die scratch running southeast from the center right of the Y in LIBERTY. On the reverse, a short die gouge runs northeast from the lower right of the D in UNITED. The 1936 Washington quarter is an early issue in the series, first struck in 1932, and doubled die varieties from the pre-war era are relatively scarce compared to later decades. The tripling on the date is the strongest pickup point, as the three distinct impressions create noticeably thickened digits visible under moderate magnification.
