1935 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-006

Description

New Deal recovery was well underway by 1935, and Denver's cent production reflected the improving economy — creating the die consumption that generates repunched mintmark varieties. WRPM-006 (Wexler Variety ID: 1935-D 1¢ WRPM-006) is the sixth cataloged RPM for the 1935 Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent, documenting another instance where the D mintmark punch was applied multiple times to a working die. The 1935-D had a mintage of 47.00 million cents, one of the larger Denver productions of the mid-1930s, and the substantial die pool required to strike that quantity ensured numerous opportunities for mintmark placement variations. Hand-punching remained the universal method for applying mintmarks at U.S. branch mints during this period, a practice that would continue for decades. Each RPM in the Wexler catalog represents a distinct die showing unique repunching characteristics — the direction and extent of separation between primary and secondary impressions differ from die to die. Attributing WRPM-006 requires comparison against published descriptions distinguishing it from the five other varieties. This variety has no additional cross-references beyond the Wexler designation.
