1935 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-001

Description

Holding the first position in Wexler's repunched mintmark catalog for the 1935 Denver Lincoln Wheat cent, WRPM-001 documents a D mintmark that was applied to the working die in a position further south than WRPM-005 and closer to the 9 in the date than WRPM-003 — placement details that serve as key diagnostics for distinguishing among multiple RPM varieties sharing the same date. The repunching itself manifests as traces of a secondary mintmark impression offset from the final accepted position, evidence that the mintmark punch was struck into the die at least twice with a slight shift between applications. This variety was examined from a circulated specimen, and better examples are needed to fully document the extent and direction of the repunching — a notation that invites collectors with high-grade 1935-D cents to contribute sharper photographs for future reference. No independent cross-references beyond the Wexler 1935-D 1c WRPM-001 designation have been established. During the 1930s, mintmarks were individually hand-punched into each working die, making minor positional variations between punching attempts an expected and common occurrence across the era's cent production.
