1935 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-004

Description

1935-D WRPM-004 is a repunched mint mark on the 1935-D Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Wexler describes it as D/D/D North and North: two repunchings, both north of the primary. Obverse Stage A: strong secondary mint marks showing both repunchings to the north; scratches running ESE from the bust; a NW/SE gouge through the middle of the upper horizontal bar of WE's E; and a scratch heading SW from the lower hair into the field. On Stage B the secondary at the top of the primary is weaker, most of the scratches at the bust have been abraded away, and the other Stage A scratches remain. On Stage C the secondary is very weak and shows only a north RPM; every earlier scratch is gone except the one at the hair, and WE's E shows only a minimal gouge. Reverse Stage A: NW/SE scratches through UNUM; an east-west scratch centered at the lower opening of UNUM's N; and north-south scratches at the left side of the T's vertical bar in CENT. On Stage B the UNUM scratches have been abraded away and those at the T are still weakly present, as they also are on Stage C. Ken Chylinski submitted Stage A and Lloyd Hanson Stages B and C. CONECA lists it as RPM #4. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
