1935-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-005

Description

Cataloged as UVC-1070, DMR-006, this 1935 Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent displays a repunched mintmark. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A is EDS (unconfirmed), Stage B shows obverse and reverse in MDS, and Stage C is LDS (unconfirmed). Repunched mintmarks on Lincoln Wheat Cents resulted from the hand-punching process used to apply individual mint mark letter punches to each working die at branch mint facilities, where slight positional errors were an inherent risk of the manual method. Struck in 95% copper at the Denver Mint during the Great Depression, the 1935-D Wheat Cent came from a period of recovering production volumes as the economy slowly stabilized. Victor David Brenner's Lincoln portrait, introduced in 1909 as the first real person depicted on a regular-issue U.S. coin, continued to anchor the obverse design. RPM-005 represents one of several repunched mintmark varieties cataloged for the 1935-D date, where the original and corrected punch positions can be distinguished under magnification.
