1935-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

Cataloged as UVC-047, DMR-004, this 1935 Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent exhibits a repunched mintmark with traces of the initial D punch visible alongside the corrected final position. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A shows both obverse and reverse in EDS, Stage B is MDS (unconfirmed), and Stage C is LDS (unconfirmed). The 1935-D Wheat Cent was struck in 95% copper as the nation began to emerge from the worst years of the Great Depression, with Denver Mint production gradually recovering from the severely reduced mintages of 1931-1933. Repunched mintmarks on Depression-era Lincoln Cents are collected both for their die variety interest and for the historical context of their production period. Hand-punching the D mintmark into each working die introduced positional variation, and when the initial impression landed off-target, the correction attempt left the diagnostic doubling that distinguishes one die from another. Early die state examples preserve the sharpest repunching evidence.
