1934 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001 / DDO-001

Description

DDO-001, which Wexler numbers WDDO-001, is a doubled die obverse on the 1934-D Lincoln wheat cent with extreme extra thickness on its lettering and date. Both catalogs give it the Cherrypickers number FS-101 (Wexler writes it FS-01-1934D-101). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties calls the doubling an extremely strong Class VI extra thickness, heaviest on the date and LIBERTY and lighter on the letters of IN GOD WE TRUST. On the obverse a strong crack runs down inside the upper front fold of the vest; on the reverse a small gouge (dot) sits just right of the lower horizontal bar of the E in E PLURIBUS UNUM. Russ LeBeau submitted the coin. CONECA lists the die as 1-O-VI, and its Coppercoins number is 1934D-1DO-001. VarietyVista, crediting James Wiles with the report, describes extreme extra thickness on every letter and on the date. It follows the die under its marker codes UVC-1320 and DMR-010 through three stages: an early stage A and a middle stage B, neither yet confirmed, and stage C, with the obverse in a late die state and the reverse still in a middle one.
