Description

Entered in the Wexler RPM Files under 1930-S 1¢ WRPM-012, with reference photographs by John Bordner, this repunched mintmark variety represents a documented die from the San Francisco Mint's 1930 Lincoln cent production. The depth of the RPM catalog for 1930-S — with entries extending through at least WRPM-014 — reflects the thoroughness of variety research applied to this date and the number of working dies prepared to meet production requirements. Each working die served a finite number of strikes before retirement, and the San Francisco Mint prepared a corresponding number of dies to produce the full 1930-S mintage. WRPM-012's distinguishing secondary punch characteristics are preserved in Bordner's photography, which provides the reference baseline for attribution. The Great Depression context of 1930 is notable: coin production at all mints was already beginning to contract as economic conditions deteriorated, yet variety documentation of 1930-S cents reveals rich die production diversity within that constrained environment. Bordner's systematic photography of 1930-S RPMs significantly advanced the completeness of the Wexler catalog for this date.
