1930 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

1930-S WDDO-001 is a doubled die obverse on the 1930-S Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. A Class V counterclockwise (CCW) spread, pivoting at 4:00, shows on IN GOD WE TRUST (IGWT) and LIBERTY. Obverse Stage A: a gouge (dot) on the vest right of the center fold, and a very short gouge jutting down from the top of the date's 3, on its underside. Stage B adds very short scratches extending north from the tops of the LIBERTY letters. Stage C adds a crack that starts at the center of the 3, runs east to loop over the top of the 0, and carries on east to the rim. On Reverse Stage A, a long scratch extends SSW through the upper left of the I and the lower right of the R in AMERICA and well into the field, ending beside the right wheat stem's tip, on its left. Two more scratches run SSW, one from the N of UNUM and one from the top right of the E in ONE, meeting in a V just right of the center bar of that E. Stage B pairs this obverse with a new reverse die, which shows light NNW-to-SSE scratches between PLURIBUS's last S and UNUM's first U. Stage C adds a crack joining the right wheat ear to the rim near 3:30. Brian Ribar submitted Stage A, Whaden Curtis Stage B and Russ LeBeau Stage C. CONECA lists it as 1-O-V and Breen as #2119; the Coppercoins number is 1930S-1DO-001. Wexler's comments add that CONECA's listing suggests a possible Stage D, with additional cracks on both obverse and reverse, and the Wexler team asks to see any coin showing them so the stage can be added. The spread is widest on IN and remains visible on GOD's G and O, dropping off sharply on the rest of IN GOD WE TRUST. On LIBERTY it is easy to see and narrows from left to right, with the L showing the widest spread.
