Description

Displaying an S over S repunched mint mark shifted to the northwest, this 1930-S Lincoln Wheat Cent was cataloged by the Wexler Team as WRPM-009 and is cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #7 and Coppercoins 1930S-1MM-004. Repunched mint marks from this era result from the manual process of hand-punching each mint mark into the working die, where a second or corrective strike of the punch could land slightly offset from the initial impression. Obverse die markers include die scratches running south from the 3 in the date to the top of the mint mark, along with a die scratch south from the bottom of the mint mark. No reverse die markers were visible on the circulated specimen examined. The photos documenting this variety were taken by John Bordner for the Wexler RPM Files. The triple cross-referencing across CONECA, Coppercoins, and the Wexler catalog provides comprehensive attribution coverage. Collectors examining 1930-S wheat cents should inspect the mint mark area under magnification for the secondary S impression shifted toward the northwest, which distinguishes WRPM-009 from other repunched mint mark varieties on this date.
