Error
Description
Documented by VarietyVista with S/S Northwest displacement, this 1930 San Francisco Wheat Cent shows an atypical die state progression suggesting die re-pairing. Die markers: UVC-1187, DMR-007. Stage A: Strong secondary mintmark — EDS; reverse is LDS. Stage B: Medium secondary mintmark — MDS; reverse is VLDS. Stage C: LDS (unconfirmed). The dramatic asymmetry where the reverse starts at LDS while the obverse is at EDS suggests this obverse die was paired with a reverse that had already seen substantial prior service. The northwest displacement indicates the initial S was placed southeast of the intended position. Struck at San Francisco in 1930, composed of 95% copper, 5% tin/zinc (3.11 g, 19.05 mm), the 1930-S had a mintage of approximately 24.3 million cents.
