Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-1296 with die marker reference DMR-004, this 1929-S Lincoln Wheat cent holds the DDO-001 designation as the primary doubled die obverse for the San Francisco issue. A medium spread shows on the digits 19 of the date, accompanied by a light spread on Lincoln's eyelid, a subtle but confirmed diagnostic feature visible under magnification above 7x. The die pair's Stage A shows the obverse in early die state, while the reverse has already developed a die crack running from the lower right wheat ear to the rim, placing even this earliest documented stage in late die state territory on the reverse side. Stages B and C, representing mid and late die states, are both unconfirmed, suggesting that most surviving specimens come from the same production window captured by Stage A. The 1929-S Wheat cent had a mintage of 50.148 million pieces. As DDO-001, this variety commands the top position in VarietyVista's doubled die obverse hierarchy for the date, and the date-digit doubling combined with the eyelid spread provides two independent diagnostic checkpoints. The early reverse die crack indicates this die pair may have had a relatively short production life before the reverse was pulled from service.
