1927-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-002

Description

Recorded by VarietyVista, this Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent from the Roaring Twenties carries the second cataloged doubled die obverse for the 1927-D date. Hub doubling occurred during the multi-impression hubbing process when the hub and working die were not precisely realigned between successive impressions. Die markers UVC-3415 / DMR-003 track three stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B at MDS (unconfirmed); Stage C with obverse and reverse at LDS. Struck at the Denver Mint in 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, Victor David Brenner's obverse design was nearing its twentieth year of production. The 1927-D had a mintage of approximately 27.2 million pieces, a moderate output that produced enough dies to generate multiple DDO varieties while keeping individual variety populations limited.
