1925 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-008

Description

Cataloged as Wexler WRPM-008, this 1925-S Lincoln Wheat Cent features a triple-punched S mint mark (S/S/S), where the small S punch was applied to the working die three separate times with slightly different placements, leaving traces of all three impressions. This same die also carries a doubled die obverse attributed as WDDO-002, making it a dual-variety coin exhibiting both a repunched mint mark and hub doubling on a single die pair. The obverse doubling manifests as extra thickness on the date, LIBERTY, and IN GOD WE TRUST. The examination was conducted on a low-grade specimen, which limits the visibility of finer details but still preserves the primary diagnostics. Triple-punched mint marks are less common than simple repunched examples, as they required the mint worker to attempt the punch placement three times before achieving an acceptable position. Dual-variety coins combining RPM and DDO status on the same die are particularly valued by specialists because they document two distinct production anomalies occurring during a single die's preparation, offering a richer window into early twentieth-century minting practices at the San Francisco facility.
