1925 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-001 / RPM-001

Description

RPM-001, which Wexler numbers WRPM-001, is an S/S South repunched mintmark on the 1925-S Lincoln wheat cent. Both catalogs give it the Cherrypickers number FS-501; Wexler writes it FS-01-1925S-501 (013.31). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties follows six stages on each side. In obverse stage A the secondary mintmark is very strong and separated from the primary on its right side, with a short NE/SW die scratch under the L of LIBERTY and an east-west die scratch near the rim below the back of the bust. Stage B keeps those markers. In stage C only the scratch under the L remains and the secondary mintmark no longer shows the separation. In stage D that scratch has become a heavy gouge close to the rim; a die crack leaves the V of VDB heading east, arcs up and returns to the bust by the last fold; die cracks show on the shoulder of the jacket and NE/SW across the head below the upper hair; and the mintmark is weaker and mushy. In stage E the jacket crack reaches into the field and the mintmark is very weak; in stage F that crack is very heavy and the mintmark heavily abraded. Reverse stage A has a curving die scratch starting at the M of UNUM, upper right, that hugs the rim and ends before the wheat lines. In stage B a very light die crack starts to form from the rim near 4:00; in stage C it is heavier and runs NW into the wheat grains. Stage D is a new reverse die, with a short die scratch running north over the B in PLURIBUS and an east-west scratch above the second U of PLURIBUS. The scratch above the U is gone in stage E, and the one above the B in stage F. Lloyd Hanson submitted stages A and F, Paul Funaiole stages B and E, Al Raddi stage C and Doug Yost stage D. Wexler also lists CONECA RPM #1, Crawford CRPM-001 and Coppercoins 1925S-1MM-001. VarietyVista, which does not name a reporter, also records S/S South and FS-501, and traces eight stages. Under marker codes UVC-012 and DMR-002: in stage A the secondary mintmark is strong, early, with the reverse early-middle; in stage B it is still strong and early while a light die crack runs from the lower right wheat to the rim, middle; in stage C a light die crack crosses V. D. B., early-middle, and the wheat crack is late; in stage D the secondary mintmark is medium, middle, with a die crack on the forehead, a light one on the shoulder, and a die crack from the right wheat tip to the M of UNUM in a very late state. Under UVC-013 and DMR-003: in stage E the secondary mintmark is weak and late, the shoulder crack stronger, and the reverse die changed, early; in stage F the shoulder crack reaches the field behind the bust, very late, with the reverse middle; in stage G it reaches further into the field, very late, with the reverse late; and in stage H it extends through the E of LIBERTY in a state VarietyVista codes VVLDS, beyond very late, with a die crack running northwest from the upper left E of ONE, very late.
