1925 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-004

Description

1925-S WRPM-004 is a repunched mint mark on the 1925-S Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Wexler describes it as S/S West, with the secondary S west of the primary. Obverse Stage A shows lathe marks circling the die near the rim, everywhere except the right side. A very heavy lathe gouge lies between the bust and the rim, spanning roughly 5:00 to 6:00, which Wexler attributes to improper chucking on the reducing lathe. Below the vest, nearer the rim, is a heavy chip caused by metal dragged along by the lathe's cutting tool, and a heavy gouge runs NE from the rim through the W of WE. On Stage B the lathe marks have been polished off, the lathe gouge and the chip below the bust are much weaker, and polishing has reduced the gouge through the W to a single gouge. On Stage C the lathe gouge is very weak, and the gouge at the W no longer crosses the letter, only touching its upper left. Reverse Stage A has north-south gouges near the rim, mostly between 11:00 and 2:00, which Wexler suggests may come from lathe chatter. On Stage B those markers are still present but weaker, and on Stage C most of them remain but are very weak. Doug Yost submitted Stage A (upgraded by Lloyd Hanson), Brian Allen Stage B and John A. Wexler Stage C. CONECA lists it as RPM #4 and Crawford as CRPM-004; the Coppercoins number is 1925S-1MM-004.
