Description

Discovered by George Powell in December 2005, VAM-1N is an over-polished die variety of the 1925 Philadelphia Peace Dollar, carrying the VAMWorld classification 1N II 1 B2a with interest rating I-2 and rarity R-5. The variety's defining feature is located on the reverse: the edge of the rim and the adjacent field below the word PEACE and to the right of the mountain have been very aggressively over-polished by the mint, resulting in the normal squared or rounded rim profile being replaced by a noticeably beveled edge in that sector. This beveling — a sloping rather than vertical transition between the field and the rim — is directly visible on struck coins as an angled surface at the coin's upper right reverse, contrasting with the standard rim treatment found on the remainder of the coin's circumference. Over-polishing of this type was typically applied to reverse dies to remove clash marks or other surface damage, but the removal of too much material in the rim zone created the diagnostic beveled profile. The 1925 Philadelphia Peace Dollar is an accessible date in the series with strong collector interest in variety attribution. VAM-1N is particularly suited to field identification because the beveled rim below PEACE is visible without optical aids once the collector knows where to look, making it a rewarding variety for those new to Peace Dollar VAM collecting.
