Description

Two distinct die conditions converge on this 1925 Philadelphia Peace Dollar: the obverse die both rusted and was subsequently polished, creating a dual-process variety documenting two phases of die maintenance. Raised dots and splotches from rust pitting appear across Liberty's face, neck, and surrounding fields — artifacts created when iron dies corrode during humid storage, producing pits that transfer as raised features onto struck coins. Overlaying the rust evidence are light die file lines, parallel scratches left when the Mint attempted to polish the corroded die back into service. Discovered in 2014 by Brent Fogelberg — known in the Peace Dollar community by the handle "fogie" — this variety carries VAM plate notation 1AP II1 - B2a with importance I-2 (moderately important) and rarity R-5 (scarce). The coexistence of rust artifacts and polish lines on a single die tells a story: the die sat long enough to corrode, then someone decided to salvage it rather than discard it. The polishing reduced but did not eliminate the rust evidence, leaving both conditions visible on struck specimens. Fogelberg is an active contributor to Peace Dollar VAM research.
