Description

Discovered in 2012 and revised in 2013, this Philadelphia Peace dollar was originally designated VAM-1AI but has since been renumbered VAM-1AI2 following the verification of an earlier die state (VAM-1AI1) that lacks the scribbling scratches at the eagle's shoulder. Classified 1AI II1 with a B2a reverse, the designation is Die Scratches Left of P, Scribbles at Eagles Shoulder, carrying a rarity rating of I-2 R-5. The reverse B2a die shows a couple of die scratches to the left of the P in PEACE along with scribbling die scratches above and to the right of the eagle's shoulder. The die state sequence matters here: VAM-1AI1 represents the die before the shoulder scribbles developed, while VAM-1AI2 shows them fully formed, indicating the scratches were introduced during a die reconditioning event between the two states. Peace dollars from 1925 had a large mintage of over ten million, making raw examples common, but attributed VAM varieties with documented die progression carry additional collector interest. The R-5 rarity rating indicates moderate scarcity within the series.
