Description
Discovered by Dr. David Close in September 2012, the 1924 Peace Dollar VAM-1BK features a dramatic die break on the reverse that traces through the middle mountain of the eagle's perch. This radial die crack extends from the rim through the mountain with a slight displaced field break, creating a raised irregular line visible on struck coins (die pair II1/B2a). Rated R-6 for rarity — indicating an estimated 13 to 30 known examples — and assigned an I-2 interest level, VAM-1BK represents one of the more visually distinctive die break varieties in the Peace Dollar series. Die breaks of this nature develop as metal fatigue progresses through the steel die, eventually separating enough to allow planchet metal to fill the crack during striking. The 1924 Philadelphia issue, one of the more available Peace Dollar dates, makes this a potentially affordable way to acquire a scarce die break variety within the series designed by Anthony de Francisci.
