1924 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
Error
Description
Filed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files under 1924 $1 WDDO-001, this Peace Dollar presents a rare dual-die doubling: the obverse shows doubling on the designer's initials and on the letters TR in TRUST, while the reverse is itself a separate doubled die listed as 1924 $1 WDDR-001. The reverse doubling manifests as a close spread on the olive branch and leaves, the eagle's talons, and the back feathers on the lower legs — three distinct reverse design zones carrying secondary hub impressions from their own independent hubbing event. A coin bearing both a DDO and DDR from matched Wexler-cataloged dies represents an uncommon convergence, as each die experienced its own separate hub doubling error and the two were then paired together. The 1924 Peace Dollar was struck at Philadelphia without a mintmark. This dual DDO/DDR pairing gives collectors the opportunity to study two independent hub doubling events on a single coin — one on the obverse affecting lettering and designer marks, the other on the reverse spreading across naturalistic design elements.
