Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1924 $1 WDDR-002, this Peace Dollar doubled die reverse presents one of the more visually compelling reverse doubling patterns in the series. Light doubling is visible on the olive branch and leaves held in the eagle's talons, while a westward-directed spread manifests on the rays positioned between the O of DOLLAR and the eagle. The most significant doubling appears on the leg feathers and the rays behind the leg, extending to the rays above and below the word ONE and to the left of the eagle — a widespread distribution of displaced design elements that indicates a substantial hub misalignment during the die manufacturing process. The westward spread direction means the secondary hub impression shifted to the left relative to the primary impression, creating the doubled images consistently on the same side of each affected element. Obverse die markers provide additional attribution confidence: a horizontal die scratch can be found inside the upper 2 in the date, and a die crack runs northwest from the top of the N in IN. The reverse carries no significant markers beyond the doubling itself. No cross-references to other cataloging systems are currently known. Anthony de Francisci's Peace Dollar design was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1924, composed of 90% silver at 26.73 grams with a 38.1 mm diameter and a reeded edge. The 1924 Philadelphia mintage of approximately 11.8 million pieces was substantial, though doubled die varieties from any Peace Dollar date remain uncommon. The multi-zone distribution of doubling across the olive branch, rays, leg feathers, and inscription elements creates a variety with numerous diagnostic checkpoints spread across the entire reverse face.
