Description

Discovered in 2012 by BJV (a contributor to the VAM collecting community), the 1924-P VAM-1BF "Die Break OF" Peace dollar documents a significant reverse die failure on the B2a reverse type. Cataloged as 1BF II1 - B2a (Die Break OF) with die classification I-2 and rarity rating R-6 (approximately 13-30 known), this variety records a radial die crack extending from the rim downward through the letters OF in "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," continuing to the eagle's head, with a displaced field break at the OF location. Die breaks of this extent — running from the rim through design elements and into the central field — represent advanced die deterioration where repeated striking stress has caused the steel to fracture along a significant path. The displaced field break at OF indicates the die fragment on one side of the crack has shifted slightly, creating a visible step or shelf on struck coins where the metal surface changes elevation across the fracture line. Philadelphia struck approximately 11.81 million Peace dollars in 1924, a moderate mintage that reflects the declining production of silver dollars during the mid-1920s before the Treasury suspended new dollar coinage entirely after 1928 (until the resumption in 1934). At R-6 rarity, with an estimated 13-30 confirmed examples, this variety is genuinely scarce and likely represents a die that was pulled from service shortly after the break developed. Collectors should examine the reverse under 10-15x magnification, tracing the crack path from the rim through the OF inscription and down toward the eagle's head, looking for the characteristic raised ridge along the fracture line and any displacement at the break zone.
