Description
Recorded from a 2011 discovery by David Close, VAM-1BE of the 1924 Peace Dollar features horizontal and diagonal die scratches on Liberty's face near the hairline. Designated II1 B2a with I-2 importance and R-5 rarity, the obverse displays a horizontal die scratch at the back of Liberty's face near the hair, accompanied by short diagonal die scratches above the nearby edge of the hair. Die scratches occur when abrasive material or tools contact the die surface during handling or maintenance, leaving incuse lines that transfer as raised lines on struck coins. The location near Liberty's face and hairline suggests they resulted from die maintenance or accidental contact during installation. Unlike die polishing lines, which run in uniform parallel patterns from deliberate maintenance, die scratches tend to appear in irregular orientations. The 1924 Philadelphia Peace Dollar had a substantial mintage exceeding 11 million pieces, making the base date readily obtainable. Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper at 26.73 grams, this variety documents irregular die scratches near Liberty's face and hairline that provide diagnostic attribution markers.
