Description

Nicknamed "Cut Throat" by variety collectors, the 1924-P Peace Dollar VAM-1AD earned its colorful moniker from a horizontal die scratch at the front of Liberty's jaw-neck junction — giving the appearance of a line across her throat. Discovered by David Close, this variety is classified as VAM-1AD under the Van Allen–Mallis system, pairing obverse die II in its first state with reverse die B2a. Die scratches of this type result from accidental contact during die polishing or handling, when an abrasive tool drags across the die face and leaves a recessed line that transfers as a raised mark on every coin struck from that die. The "Cut Throat" designation places it among the more memorably named Peace Dollar VAMs, joining a tradition of descriptive nicknames that help collectors identify specific die states. Assigned an interest level of I-2 and a rarity rating of R-5 (31 to 75 specimens known), VAM-1AD is scarce but not prohibitively rare. The 1924 Philadelphia Peace Dollar was struck in 90% silver at 38.1mm, carrying de Francisci's radiant-crowned Liberty with the Latin TRVST.
