1924-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-003

Cataloged by the Wexler Team under variety identifier 1924-D 5-cent WRPM-003, this is the third documented repunched mint mark for the 1924-D Buffalo Nickel from the Denver Mint. Three separately cataloged RPMs on a single date and mint underscore how frequently hand-punching produced misaligned mint marks during this period. Each RPM represents a different working die where the engraver's initial D punch landed improperly, leaving diagnostic traces of the first impression alongside the corrected placement. The range of RPM patterns across WRPM-001, WRPM-002, and WRPM-003 demonstrates that misalignment was a recurring challenge inherent to the manual process. Buffalo Nickels were struck on hard nickel alloy planchets that transmitted the full detail of both impressions, making attribution possible even on moderately circulated specimens.
