Description

First cataloged repunched mintmark in the Wexler system for the 1924 Denver Mint Buffalo Nickel, WRPM-001 documents a misaligned mintmark punch on James Earle Fraser's iconic design. During this era, mintmarks were individually hand-punched into each working die at the Philadelphia Mint before shipping dies to branch facilities, and any misalignment during the initial punch required a corrective second strike — leaving traces of the first position visible beneath or alongside the final D. Cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #2, the different numbering between Wexler (#1) and CONECA (#2) reflects the independent catalog methodologies maintained by each organization, where discovery sequence and attribution criteria can differ. Attributed by the Wexler Team, this variety dates from the mid-1920s when Buffalo Nickel production was well established but mintmark application remained a manual process susceptible to human error. The 1924-D is a collectible date in the Buffalo Nickel series, and an RPM adds die variety interest to an already appealing issue. The hand-punching process used for mintmarks during this period made repunched mintmarks relatively common across all denominations.
